Curly girls, I see you. Between getting two little ones ready in the morning, arriving on set on time, and sitting through make-up, caring for my own hair is always the last thing that gets a look-in. And what that usually meant: hair in a bun. Again. Because the alternative — actually trying something with my curls — almost always ended in disappointment.
I always thought my hair was just difficult. Naturally curly, naturally frizzy, and completely unmanageable the moment there was even a hint of humidity in the air. I'd try products, they'd work for a few hours, and then the frizz would come back and I'd be straight back to the bun. On set I always reached for hairspray to tame the little flyaway curly bits — not ideal, and honestly not particularly good for your hair either.
And if your hair feels tight and dry after washing, it's probably not your curls that are the problem. You're simply using the wrong products. I know that now. It took me far too long to realise it.
I never wore my hair curly on a night out. All my friends would always say: 'Why don't you wear your hair curly?' And I just didn't feel confident enough. I was convinced it would end up like Monica from Friends — bigger and bigger with every hour that passed. Or, if I'm being honest, more Hagrid than anything else. Which wasn't far off the truth.
