It seemed like they appeared out of nowhere: my curls.
As a little girl I used to have long, straight hair that I'd brush out beautifully every day — now I suddenly had an exploded mop the moment I picked up a brush. My changing hormones had started changing my hair along with them.
My sister Katja had always had curls; you could clearly see our Surinamese roots in her hair. But in me, our Chinese great-grandmother showed up more. I had never had curly hair in my life — and then, suddenly, I did.
I had absolutely no idea what to do with this "new hair." Honestly, I didn't even want curls. I just found it a hassle. So I ignored it and mostly threw my hair up in a bun.

Until my hairdresser said: "Birgit, you have curls, whether you like it or not — so you need to start using products that are actually made for curly hair." And off I went, down the slippery slope of curl products.
One product made my hair way too heavy — I have a lot of hair, but it's not that thick. Others left me with crunchy, stiff curls. Some smelled awful. And others just felt greasy.
I followed so many different "routines" I nearly lost my mind. All while standing on the set of Flikken Maastricht, in the theater, in front of the camera — with hair that was a new surprise every wash day.
You know how it goes. A drawer full of half-used bottles. The slow, expensive realization that every new product makes exactly the same promises. And that almost none of them ever delivers.
